STRAWBERRIES for Whitening Your Teeth?

Now here’s a story that sounds like an old wive’s tale if ever I heard one – as an inexpensive home whitening option, the story goes that you can whiten your teeth with strawberries – or, in some versions of this story, a mixture of mashed strawberries and baking soda. Hmm. Would it work? Here’s what dentists have to say: The concept of whitening teeth with strawberries is not a new one. It’s been floating about for years, and there is a little truth to the concept. Strawberries contain melic acid and sure enough, like any acid, it can eat away at least the mildest stains on your teeth. The whitening action of melic acid is minor – however, if left on your teeth, the acid could eat away not only the discoloration, but tooth enamel as well. On the whole, though, strawberries are a bad whitening bargain. In addition to melic acid, they contain fruit sugars that can actually promote tooth decay. The worst bargain of all is mashed strawberries combined with baking soda. Baking soda is abrasive – and the combination of acid and abrasion is the functional equivalent of rubbing acid and scouring powder over the polished surface of a porcelain enamel basin or tub. Worth it? Not really. Dental practitioners advise that anyone favoring strawberries (or baking soda, whether separate or combined) as a whitening agent very sparingly. In actuality, practitioners far prefer the strategy of carbamide peroxide gel in strengths ranging from 20-35% for periodic use in conjunction with whitening trays. That’s the very strategy we’re espousing with Shine. Twenty-two percent carbamide peroxide gel, brushed evenly but sparingly over the front surfaces only of the teeth that show when you smile and held in place by custom fit whitening trays for 15-60 minutes, as needed, is the ideal strategy for protecting your teeth’s natural enamel while maintaining a perpetually bright, white smile. At Shine’s prices, replacement gel sufficient for 7-10 days use is less expensive than a carton of strawberries. Now that’s an easy home whitening option worth getting excited about.
